Surface and Structural Treatments

Sophie Brummitt Studio carries out a range of surface and structural treatments:

Cleaning
This can involve removal of dirt, old varnishes and in some instances non-original overpaint.
Not only can dirt and yellowed varnish be unsightly but they can also be detrimental to the original paint layers.

Consolidation and Flake-laying
Raised areas of craquelure on a painting’s surface can lead to paint loss.  It is vital that raised flakes of paint should be treated and consolidated with a suitable adhesive to avoid further loss of paint.

Filling and Retouching
Losses in the paint layers can be filled and retouched invisibly.

Tear-mending and lining
Structural work can be carried out in the studio such as mending tears in the canvas and strip-lining.  If a painting requires a full lining or re-lining this is arranged by the Studio and carried out externally by a professional liner.

Conservation Framing
This is a very important part of the conservation process since significant damage can be caused to paintings which are incorrectly framed.  Small treatments on frames can be carried in the Studio however most work will be carried out by a frame conservator.
